Fears of competition in wages
Western European governments often induce fears in their societies of the competition of cheaper Eastern European labour force. According to press reports, the German government has started talks with its Polish counterpart on how to step up against those workers who come across the border and settle down as entrepreneurs, yet in practice work as employees. But Western employers welcome the cheaper Eastern labour force. Hungarian experts think that political hysteria will not result in concrete actions by the governments as Western companies do need Hungarian and other Eastern European workers in many jobs. (VG)
