Layoffs to come in public sector

Big layoffs are to be expected in public services this year, Világgazdaság learned. At least as many employees will be dismissed as in the mid-nineties, during the so called Bokros package of reform measures, when the number of public services employees dropped by 22,000 in two years. One in four employees gets his or her salary from the public sector nowadays in Hungary, yet the main problem is not with large overall figures but with the distribution of them. There are too many officials in ministries and too few employees in health care and education. (VG)
