Deficit target to be missed next year
Government deficit will be larger in 2006 in Hungary than assumed in the convergence programme adopted to pave the way for an euro-introduction in 2010. Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány will soon admit this difference, Világgazdaság learned. Mr. Gyurcsány discussed this issue on Monday evening with floor leaders of the socialist fraction in Parliament and painted a bleak picture of the budget as a result of ongoing discussions with EU statistical office Eurostat on accounting rules of motorway construction. The Prime Minister also told the floor leaders his intention to publicly admit a jump in next year's deficit soon.
