A The Wall Street Journal értesülései szerint Lloyd Austin védelmi miniszter fontolgatja, hogy a USS Gerald Ford után az izraeli partokhoz irányítja a USS Dwight D. Eisenhower repülőgép-hordozót is a kíséretével együtt. A hajónak a héten kell kifutnia a virginiai Norfolkból, és a védelmi tárca szóvivője, Bryon McGarry alezredes keddi közleményében tudatta, hogy a cél eredetileg is az volt, hogy a raj Európa közelében állomásozzon.

A Nimitz hajóosztályba tartozó Eisenhower és kísérete a tervek szerint pénteken hagyja el Norfolkot, és október végére érheti el a Földközi-tenger keleti részét, 

ahol csatlakozik az addigra már ott tartózkodó másik egységhez, amelyet Austin vasárnap rendelt izraeli vizekre. Végleges döntés még nincs arról, hogy az Eisenhower felváltja-e a Fordot, vagy mind a két egység Izrael közelében marad.

A tárcavezető folyamatosan felülvizsgálja mindkét hajóegység bevetési terveit „a haditengerészeti képességek megfelelő egyensúlyának megtalálása érdekében a különböző hadszínterek között” – közölte McGarry.

A Politico kiemelte, milyen ritka lépés az Egyesült Államok részéről, hogy potenciálisan két cirkálókkal, rombolókkal és vadászgépekkel kísért repülőgép-hordozó ugyanabban a térségben tartózkodjon. Fontos jelzés lenne a Hamász számára, hogy az amerikai hadsereg támogatja Izraelt.

A Pentagon 2020-ban telepített két repülőgép-hordozót a Közel-Keletre, amikor márciusban iraki rakétatámadás érte a Bagdadtól északra található tádzsik tábort; két amerikai és egy brit katona vesztette életét. Akkor az Eisenhower és a USS Harry S. Truman tevékenykedett az Arab-tengeren a hozzájuk tartozó kísérőhajókkal együtt.

Válaszút előtt a hatalmas réseket ütött a Hamász a szövetség falán

A NATO arra számított, hogy ezen a héten Ukrajnára koncentrál, majd a Hamász megtámadta Izraelt.

A kettős hordozóstratégia azonban a múltban súlyosan megterhelte a haditengerészetet, és a szolgálat vezetői figyelmeztettek, hogy az ilyesmi fenntarthatatlan. 

A repülőgép-hordozókra világszerte nagy igény van, és jellemzően különböző régiókban vannak elosztva.

Az Egyesült Államok megkezdte katonai utánpótlás szállítását is Izraelbe, és az amerikai védelmi minisztérium folyamatosan egyeztet az ország nagy fegyvergyártóival, hogy felgyorsítsák a függőben lévő izraeli rendelések kielégítését.
